In case you didn’t know, Earth Day is April 22! This day is a great excuse to teach your little preschooler about the importance of taking care of our planet. Here at Wollaston Child Care, we want to help our students grow into caring, socially responsible individuals. A good way to do that is to spread awareness about the planet, and how we can protect it. Plus, we’re always looking for things to celebrate here at our preschool in Quincy, MA.
Art Project: Create Your Own Earth
Using only paper plates, tissue paper, and glue, your child can create their own planet. You just have to tear the tissue paper into small, irregular shaped pieces. Next, kids can glue them however they want on the paper plate. While they’re gluing, you can take about different ways to keep the ocean and land healthy. For example, not throwing trash on the ground and recycling are easy ways to help.
Creating the earth may be enough of a project for some, but consider having them write different ways they can help the earth on bandaids, and then stick them on their earth.
Science: Nature Walks
This is a perfect project if you have a group of children of varying ages. Talk about the different ways nature is great – like how trees help clean the air or how we need water and sunlight to survive. You can even turn it into a scavenger hunt of sorts. Older children find really specific objects, while younger kids could simply find something in a category – like something brown, or something hard. Even more fun, you can adapt a game of “I Spy” to fit what you’re looking for.
At this preschool in Quincy, MA, we strive to foster children’s imaginations and teach them valuable skills using the world around them. Celebrating holidays like Earth Day can teach children about the importance of being environmentally friendly, as well as practice skills like identifying colors and objects, as well as traditional motor skills that come with art projects. Incorporating current events can help any project feel new and special.
Teachers here at Wollaston are always thinking outside the box when it comes to teaching valuable life skills. If you have any questions for us at our preschool in Quincy, MA, please reach out to us at 617-773-7217.
