Summer is supposed to be a season of spending time outside, enjoying the sunshine and warm weather. But we’ve had our share of rainy days this summer, which has been a problem for many people’s plans. While adults can usually find something to do inside on a rainy day, kids usually need a little direction to keep them entertained. And if you’re responsible for child care on a rainy day, it’s up to you to direct your kids towards fun and engaging activities. But we know that you can run out of ideas and could use a little help.
Here are four activities that will make child care on a rainy day a little easier and a lot more fun!
Set up an indoor treasure hunt.
A treasure hunt is fun and also easily adaptable. You can hide your kids’ favorite toys around the house or go through your drawers and cupboards to find “treasures” for the kids to look for and keep. If you’re really feeling ambitious, you can write out clues to help your little treasure hunters find the hiding places.
Make an arts and crafts station.
Pull out all your art supplies and set up an arts and crafts area. All kids are creative in their own way, but some will need more direction than others when presented with an array of craft supplies. The same is true of parents and caregivers, too! You can easily find lists online of easy crafts you can do with things you have around the house.
Break out the board games and puzzles.
Most of us have that closet or shelf full of board games and puzzles that remain untouched for most of the year. And what better time to pull out a few than a rainy summer day? Share a card or board game that you loved as a child, or find a new favorite to play with your family.
Have an indoor picnic.
Bring outside activities inside by setting up a picnic indoors! Spread a blanket on the floor and pack your picnic blanket for a trip from the kitchen to the living room. When you’re a kid, everything is a little more fun when you get to sit on the floor.
