Observe Earth Day with These 3 Kids’ Activities

early education and care

The early education and care of our children is about much more than preparing them for school and ensuring they reach certain milestones. It’s also about teaching them to respect and care for the world around them. With Earth Day coming up on April 22nd, we have the perfect opportunity to introduce kids to the concept of caring for the environment. There are countless hands-on activities that help kids understand what environmental impact is and show them simple ways to make the Earth a brighter place.

Need some inspiration for Earth Day activities? Here are a few of our favorites that are easy to do with kids.

Plant Seeds or Saplings

One of the best ways to care for the environment is to make more of it! If you have the space in your yard to plant some saplings or other large plants, have your kids help you add some more greenery to your personal environment. If planting a tree isn’t an option, bring it down to a smaller scale and plant some seeds outside or in pots. Over the next few days and weeks, you can watch your seeds grow into flowers, vegetables, or other plants.

Nature Cleanup Walk

By the end of April, we usually enjoy nice weather, and it’s time to get outside! To enjoy the weather and observe Earth Day at the same time, take a walk around your neighborhood or a local park. While you’re out walking, take the time to appreciate the nature around you and keep an eye out for litter. Because trash isn’t always safe to touch, have the kids point it out while an adult wearing gloves actually picks it up.

Recycling Craft

Recycling is an essential part of conservation and caring for the environment, but it involves much more than sorting your trash. Collect various recyclable materials such as paper towel rolls, egg cartons, and cardboard to make crafts or artwork. Let your imaginations run wild! Build a model of your house, your favorite animal, or whatever you can dream up. Use paint, markers, or stickers to decorate your creations and show off recycled artwork.
