Going to preschool for the first time is a big transition for both children and parents. Up until now, you both have become familiar with a certain routine, whether you are usually at home with your child or entrust them to another caregiver. Unlike other childcare arrangements, preschool comes with more expectations and begins to introduce children to the structure of a school setting.
To help you and your child prepare for the changes that come with attending preschool, we have some suggestions that will make the transition easier.
Establish a Routine
Most parents naturally fall into a routine with their children, but you will probably have to make some changes to accommodate the school schedule. Figure what time you will have to leave in the morning and make getting dressed and eating breakfast before then part of your routine. You can also find out what time snacks or lunch are at your child’s school and adjust what time you eat at home to match.
Encourage Independence
While teachers and other adults are around to help, preschoolers are encouraged to do things for themselves. You can start to foster this independence at home by having your child get dressed on their own and cleaning up after themselves. By starting these behaviors at home, your child will feel more confident when they get to preschool and will be better able to handle new expectations.
Socialize with Other Kids
For some children, preschool is the first time they are with a lot of other kids at once, which can be overwhelming. Help your child learn to socialize with other children by setting up playdates, joining a play group, or participating in activities with a group of kids.
Talk Positively About Preschool
It’s understandable if a child feels anxious about starting preschool, but parents can help calm that anxiety by talking positively about it. Of course, you should acknowledge their feelings but then turn any conversation about preschool towards the positives and what they have to look forward to. You can also read stories about starting preschool together. There are several books about starting preschool, and some of them feature characters your child may already know.
