Helping Children Develop Fine Motor Skills at Home over the Holidays

early childhood

As adults, it’s easy to forget that many everyday tasks were once difficult for us. Skills like tying shoelaces, using a keyboard, or pouring a drink seemed nearly impossible when we were young. These basic abilities—now second nature—are built over time through practice, patience, and guidance. For young children, especially in early childhood, developing fine motor skills is a crucial part of learning and growing.

Fine motor skills involve the coordination of the small muscles in the hands and fingers. These skills are essential for daily tasks like writing, buttoning a shirt, using utensils, or typing on a keyboard. The more opportunities children have to practice these movements, the more confident and independent they become.

At Wollaston Child Care, we work daily to help children strengthen their fine motor skills in the classroom. But development doesn’t stop at school. Practicing at home plays an equally important role. With the holidays coming up, there are plenty of opportunities for parents to support their child’s motor skill development in meaningful ways with simple, fun activities.

In the Kitchen

The kitchen can be an excellent learning environment for children with proper supervision. You can adjust tasks to suit your child’s abilities, helping them build confidence while learning life skills. Holiday cooking and gatherings provide plenty of opportunities for children to practice fine motor skills. Try these activities:

  • Setting the table
  • Using forks, spoons, and (child-safe) knives
  • Pouring juice or water into a cup with assistance
  • Stirring ingredients or helping prep meals
  • Wiping and clearing the table after eating

These small tasks encourage independence and give children a sense of accomplishment while strengthening their coordination.

During Play Time

Play is one of the most powerful tools for learning, especially when you have more time at home over the holidays. Encourage your child to engage in both free and guided play that promotes creativity and skill-building. Some excellent options include:

  • Finger painting (great for sensory development)
  • Playing with playdough (try making it together for added fun!)
  • Solving puzzles
  • Playing board games that involve moving small pieces
  • Cutting paper with safety scissors

These activities not only improve fine motor control but also boost cognitive skills, patience, and focus. Most importantly, they’re fun!
