Top Safety Tips for Summer Outdoor Play

School is almost out, and kids will soon be running around outside enjoying the warm weather. Parents and child care professionals are preparing activities to keep kids engaged and active throughout the summer, but we can’t forget to put safety first. By taking basic precautions to keep your kids safe, you can feel confident when you set them free to play outside or bring them to their outdoor summer activities.

There are many safety precautions parents and child care providers should take to keep their kids safe in the summer. Here are three top safety tips.

Use Sunscreen

We’ve all been told to wear sunscreen over and over again, but it bears repeating. The summer sun is strong, and you should do everything you can to protect your kids from sunburn. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends that all children wear broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least 30 SPF when outdoors. For added protection, dress your kids in sun-protective clothing of 50 UPF or higher, and have them wear a hat with a brim and sunglasses to protect their face and eyes.

Stay Hydrated

Dehydration is a risk factor for kids all year round, but especially in the summertime when they are outside in the heat. Children’s bodies don’t cool down as quickly as adults’, so it’s important to remind your kids to drink water while they are playing outside. Always have a filled water bottle nearby, especially when your kids are playing sports or participating in other strenuous activities while in the heat.

Wear a Helmet

From bikes to skateboards to scooters, there are plenty of things with wheels that kids love to ride. Anytime your kids are on wheels, they should be wearing a helmet. However, you need to ensure that your child’s helmet fits properly to protect them from head and brain injuries. Fitting a helmet involves more than just getting one in the right size. You also have to position it correctly on their head and adjust the straps to make them secure. While helmets are essential safety equipment, elbow and knee pads are also a good idea, especially for kids who are still learning to ride.
