Parents and childcare providers love to send kids outside to play whenever they can, even in the winter. Kids love playing outdoors in the winter because there’s snow on the ground, transforming an ordinary backyard or familiar playground into a magical new place. However, playing outdoors in winter comes with safety concerns, but with the right preparation, you can ensure your kids have a safe and fun time in the snow.
Playing in the snow is an essential winter experience for every child. Here are some outdoor winter safety tips from our childcare team.
Dress Warm, Dress in Layers
New England winters are cold! Dressing in layers is the best way to stay comfortable and keep warm. Start with a base layer, followed by an insulating layer, and then a waterproof outer layer. Layer on the top and bottom; snowpants are just as important as jackets! Don’t forget hats, warm gloves or mittens, and waterproof boots. Check periodically that everyone is warm and dry and hasn’t lost any articles of outerwear.
Watch the Weather
The weather is always unpredictable, so keep one eye on the sky. The wind can pick up, or the sun can disappear behind the clouds, turning a mild day into a much colder one. Check the forecast and be ready to call everyone inside if the weather takes a turn. On especially cold days, have kids take periodic warm-up breaks inside. Quick breaks are also a great opportunity to hydrate and have a warm snack.
Play in a Safe Spot
Snow may cushion a fall, but you want to ensure kids are playing in safe areas. For sledding and tubing, find an incline that’s not too steep and clear of obstacles like trees and fencing. You also want to avoid any sledding paths that end on a road or driveway. If multiple kids are playing together, make sure they take turns to avoid collisions.
Stay Visible
Daylight hours are shorter in winter, and afternoons can get dark quickly. Bright or reflective clothing keeps kids visible on overcast days, even in full daylight. Ensure that kids playing are always in an adult’s eyeline.
Teach Winter-Specific Safety Skills
Children should know basic winter safety rules, such as walking carefully on icy surfaces, never throwing hard-packed snow or ice, and using sleds properly. Remind them that snowbanks can be unstable and dangerous, especially near roads or parking lots.
